THE DARK SCIENCE of Five Continents
CONCEPT
Curated by Shaheen Merali

The Dark Science of Five Continents is a homage to that which rises out of this period of poisoned climes. It examines, through un-tethered projects, the gradual morosity of a globality that is much more sinister, usurped and more violently imbalanced. Its desperation now seeps into all aspects of our everyday command, within which we have even come to doubt information in an age of such, culminating in an era that is satiated with doubt rather than comprehensive faith in our making. If the artists’ work is about anything, then it is a recording of a rising faithlessness unflatteringly recast in seemingly confrontational notations of miscomprehensions. Strategically, it is about the critical responsibility in a given cultural-context in which the Situationists had called for artists work ‘to relocate their practice within the expanded networks of activist counter-culture.’ By using art as a tool kit, we ask pertinent questions of our whereabouts - what does art have to do in this? And, whilst it takes time for these works to allow us to learn, they aim to bring to a closure some of the learned tyranny. Their subjective striations introduce a grasp of knowledge to a yearning audience that refocuses attention, demoting the extravaganzas of the risky disorientation that has cultivated this cancerous ethos and, in certain moments, has helped deepen a poetic kinship through the expressive nature of artistic invention.
